Vienna (Austria) – 4 April 2024 – Over the past decade, anti-corruption, ethics and compliance programmes have become increasingly prevalent in companies worldwide. Measuring anti-corruption compliance is essential for protecting the company's interests, maintaining legal and ethical standards and building trust with stakeholders. It enables the company to identify areas for improvement, mitigate risks and demonstrate its commitment to responsible business practices.
During a global webinar on 4 April 2024 on 'Measuring anti-corruption compliance in your company', participants discussed the intricacies of assessing anti-corruption compliance programmes, featuring insights into effective measurement strategies and good practices. In the first part of the event, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the United Nations Global Compact (UN Global Compact) shared insights and good practices on compliance measurement of anti-corruption programmes, prominently featuring UNODC’s 2013 publication “An Anti-Corruption Ethics and Compliance Programme for Business: A Practical Guide” that will be updated jointly by UNODC and the UN Global Compact in the coming months.
From theory to practice: voices of practitioners
The next segment of the webinar was moderated by Ms. Ana Carracedo, Chief Compliance Officer at Aegea, Brazil and featured contributions from Ms. Samantha Padayachee, Managing Executive of Compliance and Financial Services Risk at Vodacom Group, South Africa; Mr. Yau Chau Fong, Managing Director of Durianê, Malaysia and Mr. Peter Jonker, Integrity Partner and Independent Consultant from Switzerland. They provided practical examples illustrating the design and implementation of compliance measurement of anti-corruption initiatives in real-world scenarios, including the perspectives of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Over 1,800 participants from over 130 countries attended the webinar. Key takeaways included the importance of keeping policies and procedures relevant for both employees and business partners, facilitating the optimization of the overall corporate anti-corruption programme. UNODC and the UN Global Compact also updated participants on the recently launched Resource Guide on State Measures for Strengthening Business Integrity, a joint initiative between them and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The Guide will be used to support States in enhancing business integrity through the application of a mix of sanctions and incentives in the private sector.
The event was part of a broader Global Webinar Series on Business Integrity co-organized on a regular basis by UNODC and the UN Global Compact.
